Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE)

24-Hour Rape Crisis Hotline: 845-634-3344

SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner) is part of an innovative nationwide movement that recognizes the need for compassionate, non-judgmental medical care for those reporting a sexual assault. Forensic examiners are medical professionals who are expert at comprehensive assessment, identification, and documentation of injuries. These forensic skills are provided with an understanding of the emotional and social impact of a sexual assault.

SAFE services are provided at Nyack Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital through a collaborative partnership with THE CENTER.

If you have been sexually assaulted, call the Hotline at 845-634-3344
A Rape Crisis Counselor will speak with you about your options, including the choice to report to the hospital Emergency Department for a compassionate and thorough examination by the Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner. At the hospital Emergency Department, the Rape Crisis Counselor and the Examiner will explain your rights and your choices, including:

  • Examination
  • Medication to prevent sexually transmitted diseases
  • Emergency contraception
  • Evidence collection
  • Police notification
  • Pressing charges against the perpetrator

You can choose any or all services. SAFE services are provided FREE to survivors of sexual assault age 12 and above. Parental permission is not required.

If you think you may want evidence collected, do not shower, use the bathroom, brush teeth, change clothes, or eat or drink anything before coming to the hospital Emergency Department. However, evidence can still be collected if you have done any of these things. Medical care is very important after an assault. If you want evidence collected from your body, but are not sure if you want to press charges, evidence will be held for 30 days while you consider your options.
