A History of the Center for Safety & Change formerly Rockland Family Shelter

1979

Rockland Family Shelter is established, offering a crisis hotline and emergency shelter

1980

The Children's Program was instituted.

The Center for Advocacy and Support Services (CASS),Non Residential Domestic Violence walk in center was established.

CSC began professional trainings for police, social service staff, mental health staff and the district attorney's office.

1981

CSC purchases The Haven (later sold) to provide transitional housing for former Shelter residents and children

1984

The Rape Crisis Center was established, providing a 24-hour emergency hotline and rape crisis counselors.

The community and professional education program is broadened to high school and college students, community groups and professional organizations.

1986

Rockland County STOP F.E.A.R. (Family Abuse, Endangering Women and Children, Abuse of All Kinds, Rape and Sexual Assault) Coalition was established.

1988

The Spanish Bilingual Project was established, offering bilingual, bicultural services to Latino families

1993

The Shelter sponsored the first domestic violence training for Rockland County physicians.

1994

Project Tikvah for Orthodox and Hasidic battered women and their children is launched

The Mary Weingard Domestic Violence Law Project for CSC clients is established

1995

The Domestic Violence Health Care Protocol, created by the Health Subcommittee of STOP F.E.A.R, was implemented by the Rockland County Department of Health, local hospitals and other medical facilities in the county.

1996

CSC, in conjunction with the Spring Valley Police Department and VCS Batterer's Intervention Project, received a grant to create " Communities Combat Domestic Violence Project", with programs in three Spring Valley locations. CSC established the Haitian Community Service Project, offering bilingual, bicultural services to Haitian families

1997

CSC launches program for battered lesbian and bisexual women. This program later grows into the CSC LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning) Program

1998

Collaboration between CSC and the Asian Women's Alliance for Kinship and Equality (AWAKE) began. CSC established the Asian Community Project, offering bilingual, bicultural services to Asian families.

CSC expended to satellite locations in Nyack, Haverstraw and Spring Valley

CSC, STOP F.E.A.R. Coalition, VCS Community Change Project and Rockland Alliance for Prevention hosted a groundbreaking conference: "How Safe is Our Community".

1999

CSC launches its Teen Dating Violence Prevention Program

2000

CSC established the African American Community Project, offering culturally sensitive services to African American families.

2001

CSC launched “Safe Mom – Safe Kids”, a collaborative project with Child Protective Services.

2003

CSC opens its Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) program at Nyack Hospital

2004

CSC celebrated its 25th anniversary year.

Established the Rockland County DELTA Project ( Domestic Violence Prevention Enhancement And Leadership Thru Alliances) funded by the Centers for Disease Control and NYSCADV (New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence).

2005

Purchased non-residential programs and administrative office building and commenced first Rockland Family Shelter Capital Campaign.

Opened Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) Program at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Student Activities Ending Dating Abuse (SAEDA) was established.

2006

Non-residential services programs and administrative office building is renovated with more than $2 million raised in the Capital Campaign

2007

Non-residential programs and administrative office moves to 9 Johnson Lane in New City

CSC expands its services to include the Comprehensive Crime Victims Assistance Program located in the Rockland County District Attorney’s office.

2009

CSC Celebrated its 30th anniversary year.

2010

In collaboration with the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office and various partners, CSC celebrated the opening of a New Special Victims Unit on the grounds of the Good Samaritan Hospital.

2012

Rockland Family Shelter changes its name to Center for Safety & Change to better reflect the broad array of non-residential and residential services it provides; the emergency residential shelter retains Rockland Family Shelter name
